Most recently I was able to sit down with my longtime friend Billy Gruber and talk about what he's been doing on the scene. A 2015 BGSU graduate with a Bachelors of Arts in World Music. Billy now plays with Tree No Leave while running his new business Synesthetic Oil Spill. Inspired by the theater scene in the 50's and 60's as well as psychedelic rock performances Billy can add a lot to any live show.

Billy loves performing with different groups. He is one hell of a hand drummer and has performed extensively with both Indian Opinion and Tree No Leaves as well as other groups across the state of Ohio. Billy feels that not every band or song has a place for a hand drummer, but he still wanted to contribute somehow. With a desire to stay as involved as possible Billy began brainstorming ideas and came up with Synesthetic Oil Spill.

As he got things started Billy did shows for free and began working his connections with bands across the state. Synesthetic Oil Spill has supplied lighting for bands like Indian Opinion, American Spirits and Discount Nostalgia. At these shows Billy would offer to do lights for other bands on the bill. Over time with hard work and great results bands and fans alike began to recognize and look forward to Billy's light shows. Billy described the process as "hit up any and every band". The process as Billy explains is relatively simple. The oils are mixed in between two glass clock faces. Billy then uses his skill as a drummer to coordinate the mixing and movements of the oils with the music. It is often a messy process that can be hard to control, but that is the beauty of it. It is a spontaneous and random art. Synesthetic Oil Spill can take any performance to the next level and is available for hire. Make sure to check out the Plug Profile and Facebook page!
